This review was
taken from "Q" magazine. Issue 208 (November 2003). SINGLES DUO MAKE A GREAT ALBUM. OF SINGLES
Earlier this year, Vince
Clarke & Andy Bell secured their 28th top 40 single with a glossy retread of Peter
Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill". The 19 tracks here tell only part of the tale - 1992's
"Pop! - The First Twenty Hits" was a more rewarding purchase - but they make
Erasure's case as pop giants. Their formula was simple: irresistably catchy synth-laden
hooks, whopping choruses and verses which sound like choruses. With witty self-awareness,
one of these hits is even called "Chorus", while "Stop!", "Blue
Savannah" & "Ship Of Fools" are the glorious sound of a million
suburban nights. Oh, and they had 5 number one albums, too.
