¨ Andy Bell DJ Set

24th May Andy did a DJ set at The Café in San Francisco. The event was part of a post concert DJ set produced by Energy 92.7 FM, “Energy Café”. Tuesday’s set with Andy Bell was a special benefit for the Stop AIDS
Project of San Francisco.

He played an interesting set that included: "Don't Say You Love Me", "Supernature" (not an Erasure version), "State Farm" (Yazoo) and track from his solo album.

¨ HIGIA/ATTSFOOL Slipcase

Once again the EIS is collecting names and addresses on behalf of Mute UK's marketing department for those in the UK and Ireland who wish to receive a slipcase.

For those of you that have joined this email mailing list since the last single (hello btw!!) and don't know what I'm talking about, basically the slipcase is a wallet that the three formats (2 CDs & 1 DVD) can be kept in and are mailed out in advance of a new single release.

¨ Editorial Bit

Reading the forum recently, I came across a thread entitled 'if there is a 4th single from "Nightbird" what should it be?'

Will a 4th single happen? Well I've got no idea and I'm not aware of one currently being planned. However Mute aren't stupid (and yes I'm saying that with a straight face) and if the new HIGIA/ATTSFOOL single is a success then it makes sense to me to capitalise on that success.

So what am I saying? That everyone should rush out and buy 10 copies of the next release?? No of course not. But there are things you can do to help build awareness of the new single.

One of the more common complaints I receive via email is that local radio stations don't play new Erasure songs and that they can't find the new single in the shops. Therefore...

- If in the past you have had problems finding a new Erasure single (or a particular format of the release) in your local shop then *pre-order* this new single.

I will say it again: *PRE ORDER THIS NEW SINGLE*

This will alert the store of the demand for the new single, which will in turn ensure that they have sufficient stock, thereby enabling *YOU* (and others) to buy it on the day / week of release, and save you from going from store to store in a vain attempt to find it. Catalogue numbers are available within the releases section.

- Contact your local radio station to request that they play the new single. EIS Member Gavin has compiled an extensive list of UK media contacts / radio stations here:

The general feedback seems to be that 'Here I Go Impossible Again' and 'All This Time Still Falling Out Of Love' are perhaps the two most popular songs from Nightbird. I hope this bodes well, as hopefully us fans can gain something from a chart success.

¨ Interview With Andy

U-Press Telegram has published a brand new interview with Andy taken recently in Chicago.

Here are several interesting snippets from it.

Q: Many music critics have said that "Nightbird" is a return to Erasure's happy synth-pop roots compared to the darker sounds of previous albums. Do you think you and Vince got away from your sound but now are back on track?

A: We did a bit. We did have our drug-fueled Erasure album in 1995 ("Erasure"), on my part anyway. It didn't get off the ground with radio play. Then people thought we split up. Then it took a while to get back into the swing of things.

One of Vince's favorite albums is (1997's) "Cowboy". Although I wasn't a huge fan. I thought it was too simplistic and poppy. "Loveboat" (2000) was a bit too indie sounding.

This one, after (2003's) ("Other People's Songs") experiment, was really back to what I like doing.

Q: Earlier, why did you call the "Erasure" CD a "drug-fueled album, on my part anyway"?

A: I was doing too much cocaine in the studio.

Q: Did that bother Vince?

A: We were (working) separately. We started to do it as an experiment, but it's not really very creative.

Q: I read recently that you said you stopped using cocaine. Is that right?

A: Yeah. Being on tour, it's almost impossible to do it. It (screws up) your voice completely. I have done it casually since then, but it's nothing like how I used to be. My boyfriend and I used to be terrible for ages. We started in 1995, and it was up until 2000, when my boyfriend (Paul Hickey, 55) had a stroke.

Q: Was the stroke cocaine related?

A: It could have been. There was too much partying. The rock 'n' roll lifestyle, really.

Q: You still use cocaine?

A: Not as much as before. Only very casually.

Q: When was the last time you did it?

A: The last time would've been about…when we were on the last break, rehearsing for the tour in January.

Q: How tough is it not using it?

A: It's really hard. I admire anybody who's completely stopped. It's a huge thing. Thank god I was never interested in anything like heroin.

Q: Did Vince think the drug use was interfering with making Erasure music?

A: He's had his moments as well. He's lived abroad before. He used to have a studio in Amsterdam, but he had to lock up the studio and sort of escape from Amsterdam. It was all getting too heavy.

¨ "The Alternative" Will Be Repeated

¨ Interview With Vince

Vince Clarke recently chatted with Ed Condran from orlandosentinel.com about the tour and the disc, and revealed that Erasure will move in a new direction.

Here are some interesting quotes from that interview.

Q: Did you ever think of straying from the electronic and staying with the acoustic versions of what you've written?

A: We've experimented. Last year we recorded a whole album of acoustic songs. We took 10 or 11 tracks that we already recorded that we thought could have been singles at the time. Then I got together with some musicians in New York. We had some mandolin players, pedal steel guitar players and bass players and recorded this acoustic record. That's the first time we did a whole album like that.

Q: When is the album coming out?

A: We hope to release it at the beginning of next year. It's an Erasure record.

Q: How did Andy like it?

A: He loved it. At first, we were going to use the original vocals recorded before we had the accompaniment. He really wanted to sing them again fresh. That musical background made him sing it differently, and he loved it. It's all finished and mixed.

Q: Will you tour behind the forthcoming album with a full band?

A: We'd like to. We're talking to a few people about it. I don't know how that's going to work out. That's completely different for us but it would make sense for us to do it.

Q: Nightbird is an upbeat album. It's an optimistic disc, unlike some of the material you've written.

A: It is an up album. It's an extension of where we're at right now. We're happy, and it shows in our music. I'm thinking about the next record already, which is a good thing for us.

Tickets for the 2nd May are valid for the 6th June performance and tickets for the 3rd May are valid for the 7th June performance.

The complete first season of us comedy sitcom "Scrubs" will be released on DVD in America on May 17th. The running gag about "A Little Respect" is in episode three.

Unfortunately the two Washington DC shows (2nd and 3rd May) have had to be cancelled due to Andy having the flu.

It is not known at this time if the shows will be rescheduled.

"Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Erasure shows have been postponed. Erasure has been rescheduled June 6th [for 5/2 ticket holders] and June 7 [for 5/3 ticket holders]"

¨ Vince Is Going To Be A Father!

Amazing news! Vince's wife Tracy is pregnant and must give birth to their child in june / july! Vince and Tracy got married around a year ago in New York.

¨ "Country And Western" Album News

On the recent VH1 Classic programme, Vince said the acoustic album might be released early next year. Earlier he also said that they would probably play a couple of acoustic gigs too (thanks to Northdreng for the info).
