¨ Erasure German Promotion Tour

Last week Erasure did a lot of promotion in Germany. They were interviewed by several radiostations, played several acoustic gigs and made some photos. Here are the brief news of what and where they did:

- NDR 2

Erasure did an interview which can be found here (in German) or here (in English, thanks to soulfatigue for the translation). Some interesting snippets from it are below:

Question: In contrast to the Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode your success has dwindled somewhat in the recent years. Can you say why that is?

Andy: That’s because we are simply better. We tried different things and some of them didn’t work as well as did others. We are more original and that’s why it was harder for people to follow us.

Question: What exactly did you try?

Andy: We released the album "Erasure" that reminded one of Pink Floyd and was rather experimental. Then we did "Cowboy" which again was very commercial, then there was "Loveboat" that had lots of indie-guitars. I can’t say why these albums flopped, all I know is that they didn’t get airplay. It just wasn’t our time.

Question: You are embarking on a tour. What can your audience expect?

Andy: It will be a fantastic mixture of songs. [Andy mentions the first songs of the setlist.]

Vince: Don’t give away all the tracks!!!

Andy: No no, I won’t. All I want to say is that it doesn’t feel like a combination of singles but like the set-up of a band that has been around for years. And I believe – sometimes I’m just so arrogant – U2 would be proud if that was their concert. If those were their songs they’d be full of pride!

Vince: [points to the "Nightbird" cover]: That’s what the stage will look like, like a little forest.

- Jump Radio

Erasure did an interview which can be listened via stream format here (thanks to Jens Pielawa for the info). Also several photos of the band were made in the studio. See below:

¨ Contribute To The New 'Erasure Show' Tour Programme

A list of some of the songs that are to be performed on the forthcoming 'Erasure Show' tour is now listed on the EIS site - the rest are to remain a surprise!

The reason why these are being revealed now is that the authors of the tour programme / guide book would like EIS members to write in with some comments of their favourite songs from the list.

The plan is to publish a selection of the comments in the tour programme. For example one could write about the first time you heard a particular song, what it means to you, if it helped you through a difficult time - that sort of thing.

If you wish to write something, please do so via the 'Contact' section of the website. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 26th January 2005 12:00pm (GMT).

Please do not publish the setlist on other websites / mailing lists / forums, but feel free to link to the page. Many fans do not wish to be informed of a tour setlist before seeing a performance.

¨ Top Of The Pops - Viewing Outside The UK

A reminder that Erasure will be performing 'Breathe' live on 'Top Of The Pops' this Friday (the show is broadcast live and is not pre-recorded).

BBC1 : 7.30pm Friday 14th Jan
BBC1 : 1.15am Sunday 16th Jan

The UK edition of 'Top Of The Pops' is also shown on the Canadian channel 'BBC Kids', and usually on 'BBC Prime' which is available in Africa, America, Asia and Europe. The schedules for 'BBC Prime' vary in each territory, so please check out the BBC website for schedule information.

I believe that the 'BBC America' channel has ceased showing Top Of The Pops.

¨ Digimpro Software - Mac Version

The Digimpro software on CD2 of 'Breathe' (the one with the pink cover) is only compatible with Windows based PC's.

However Rupert from Digimpro has posted on the EIS Forum the following statement:

"We are working our little socks off to have a Mac version, which in due course will be available as a free download (so hold on to your Breathe CD2!). "

Which is great news I'm sure you would agree!

Digimpro : http://www.digimpro.com

Oh, and that reminds me - thank you to all those that have sent in MP3's of 'Breathe' remixes - they should be online by the end of the week.

¨ A Favour Please...

At the moment I'm being inundated with emails that generally ask the same questions, and I have 900+ unanswered emails in my inbox.

So to aid efficiency and to reduce this backlog I'm going to answer the most common queries here:

Q1) When are 'Erasure' next performing in *insert place name here*.

All confirmed tour dates are listed on the website, if additional dates are added, the tour page will be updated and an EIS Update Email sent.

Q2) Can you send me a backstage pass?

No, it is not something that the EIS can or will ever arrange.

Q3) Can you send me an autograph picture of Andy / Vince?

Autographed items are only available as competition prizes I'm afraid.

Q4) Can the band dedicate a song / mention me / say 'Happy Birthday' for me when they're on stage?

No.

Q5) Mute should use my fan remix of 'Breathe' on a future single.

I have passed this idea onto Mute (with relation to the Digimpro MP3's sent into the EIS) although that in no way means it will happen.

Q6) When is 'Boxset 5/6', 'The Acoustic Album', next concert DVD being released?

No idea.

An article where Andy discusses his forthcoming solo album is online:

"I just got off the phone with Andy Bell from synth pop duo Erasure who gave me the full scoop on his upcoming solo album. The singer is currently putting the final touches on the record, which should drop late 2005 or early 2006. Working title for the CD is "Manhattan Clique" and Andy revealed the disc will most likely feature a duet with Scissor Sister Jake Shears."

¨ Andy Bell To Duet With Jake Shears

This exclusive news came from Arjanwrites.com. Here is the quote:

"I just got off the phone with Andy Bell from synth pop duo Erasure who gave me the full scoop on his upcoming solo album. The singer is currently putting the final touches on the record, which should drop late 2005 or early 2006. Working title for the CD is "Manhattan Clique" and Andy revealed the disc will most likely feature a duet with Scissor Sister Jake Shears. After Jake has worked with Kylie Minogue and Elton John, this is another match made in gay heaven.

Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters"I am good friends with DJ Sammy who is the boyfriend of Kiki of drag act Kiki & Herb," Andy told me. "Sammy was on tour with Scissor Sisters and he invited us to come watch a show. [Scissor Sisters] dedicated one song that night to Erasure, which I thought was really sweet. Jake introduced the song by saying that he saw us live when he was 12 years old. I emailed him later to see if he would be into [a duet] and he loved the idea."

¨ An Open Letter From Erasure.Ru

"For the attention of Chief Editor of the "Kinopark" magazine, Ms.Larissa Vinnik.

An open letter from the team of Erasure.ru and the Russian Erasure fanclub

Dear Larissa,

A review for the new Erasure DVD "The Tank, The Swan And The Balloon Live!" was printed in the latest issue of the "Kinopark" magazine (#1 dated January 2005). In pursuit of "colorful" methaphors the author of the review, Yelena Yamchuk, took the liberty of making statements that we consider to be untolerable, incorrect and simply offensive towards Andy Bell, the musician who is well known and respected throughout the world, having referred to him as "a sweaty fag". It is a real shame that being the Chief Editor, you allow such phrases to appear on the pages on the "Kinopark" magazine. Andy Bell who will celebrate 20 years of his successful career as a part of Erasure in 2005, is rightfully considered to be one of the brightest representatives of the modern pop music, and the duo whose second member is Andy's colleague Vince Clarke is one of the most successful British duos of all times.

The review for the DVD "The Tank, The Swan And The Balloon Live" written by Yelena Yamchuk contains a lot of inaccuracies, which testifies about the lack of professionalism and incompetence of Yelena, who did not care even to write the DVD title without mistakes. Instead of that Yelena plays with methaphors offending Andy Bell and forgetting about professional and general human etiquette. Of course, when someone is not skilled enough, writing a good review (whether positive or negative) is a difficult task, and one has to invent phrases like "sweaty fag" and "cockroach eyes".

Besides, the cover placed in the magazine together with the review has absolutely nothing in common with the real cover of the DVD, it's a cover for the VHS tape of the same title released more than 10 years ago. However, we put the blame for that on the editor.

We have to say that the general impression from this review leaves much to be desired. We hope that as a Chief Editor of the magazine you will assume necessary measures, and there will be no such "opuses" from your authors in the future.

Sincerely yours,

The team of Erasure.ru and the Russian Erasure fanclub"

Hit 40 UKYou can now vote for "Breathe" as a best new chart entry in "Hit 40 UK" chart show here.

¨ Several Interesting Snippets

Below are several interesting snippets from the recent Billboard / Yahoo / Reuters publication about Erasure.

"Nightbird" comes on the heels of misguided studio albums "Loveboat" (released internationally in 2000) and "Cowboy" (1997) -- and last year's covers album, "Other People's Songs." According to Nielsen SoundScan, "Loveboat" and "Cowboy" have sold 5,000 and 160,000 units, respectively, in the United States, while "Other People's Songs" has sold 49,000 units."

"The new album is akin to hearing from a long-lost friend -- one who may have rested on his laurels at one time, but who is now out to prove something."

"Because Andy now lives in Spain and the U.K. and I now live here in the U.S., we don't see each other unless we're working," Clarke says. "When we do get together to work, it's really exciting. It's like we're starting all over again."

"We both come with lots of ideas and excitement," Clarke continues. "It's like being married for 20 years: You may not have sex as often as you used to, but when you do, you really go for it."

"That said, Clarke notes that his mother often tells him that Erasure songs all sound the same. "She says, 'Whenever I hear one of your songs on the radio, I always know it's you -- even if I don't know the song.'"

"Because Clarke knows every part of every Erasure song, he sees things differently. "I'll think, 'You hear that sound right there, well, I've never done that before.' So, for me, it's weird when people say our songs sound the same. Of course, Andy's voice remains Andy's voice."

"Bell's choirboy-like voice shines on "Nightbird." And so do the arrangements. Despite its flaws, Bell says the covers album "rejuvenated" the duo."

"When we looked at other people's writings, we came upon arrangements that perhaps weren't traditional Erasure arrangements," Clarke adds. "This profoundly affected us: It made us look at our own arrangements when it came time to write for this album."

Hello all!

Last update of the week!

¨ Final Midweek Chart Update...

Well what can I say? The latest midweek chart update has 'Breathe' remaining at number 4!

This is fantastic news - and if the support you guys are giving this release it maintained over the next two days (today and Saturday), then it looks like Andy and Vince will have a Top 5 single!

That would be an incredible result - and would be their highest charting single since 1994. Wouldn't that be a great start to Erasure's 20th Anniversary year?

¨ A Few Queries Answered

- All 3 formats of 'Breathe' (the 2 CDs and the DVD single) count towards the charts.

- Woolworths are only stocking one of the formats (CD 1 / the one with the red sleeve).

- The remix software (so you can mix your own version of 'Breathe' on a PC) is on the second CD (the one with the pink sleeve)

- HMV seems to be the cheapest place to buy 'Breathe'.

News

                  03.01.05

Greg EIS:

Hello, and welcome to the first EIS Update of 2005!

And what a year 2005 is going to be! With the forthcoming tour, new album and single all happening soon, I'm sure I share your excitement in what the next 12 months are going to bring.

I was going to do a review of the past year. But fear not - I decided not to ramble on about that in todays update. I'm going to ramble on about 'Breathe' instead! Ha!

¨ 'Breathe' - 3rd January!

Yes, the wait is *almost* over - the three format (2CDs & DVD) release of 'Breathe' is out in two days!

With great feedback from radio stations, clubs, NME magazine (yes I was as shocked as you were!) and the addition of 'Breathe' being added to the BBC Radio 2 A-List for the week of release, the signs are looking good for this single to be a major success for Erasure.

How great is all this?

So any thoughts on the chart position? Top 15? Top 10? Even top 5?

Well being a brand new single, from a brand new album of original songs, I certainly feel that it deserves to chart higher than the 2003 releases - so let's make that happen!!

A word of warning though - some retailers (such as supermarkets) tend to only stock only one of the three single formats (usually CD1), and some retailers no longer sell CD singles at all (e.g. WH Smiths).

A good place to find the single in the UK will be your local Virgin Megastore or HMV (this is based on personal experience - this isn't an endorsement). Of course one can purchase the single online - sales from Amazon UK will count towards the UK chart only if the CDs are shipped to a UK postal address.

Now I'm not going to go on and on about how important a high chart position is for Nightbird's debut single, as I should think that would be fairly obvious, but suffice to say, lets help it get *at least* Top 10 and enjoy the results...

¨ New Erasure Interview

The new interview with Erasure has been published at icWales website. Here are several interesting snippets from it:

"For the past two years Vince, 43, has been ensconced in New York, where he's lived with Tracey, his girlfriend, and now wife.

The couple recently married, Vince says, recalling the ceremony with a smile.

"We went in on the Friday to Brooklyn Town Hall, the license was 35 dollars," says Vince. "Then we went down on the Monday, got married in 25 seconds before going down the pub, just the two of us."

"We didn't tell anybody, we just went and did it and then phoned everybody afterwards. It was great. People were a bit disappointed but I think everyone was pleased for us. For me it was the perfect way to do it."

"...1992 was a spectacular year for the band as they embarked on their Phantasmagorical Entertainment tour - which featured on the band's recent DVD release The Tank, The Swan And The Balloon Live! - and broke records by selling out 15 dates at London's Hammersmith Apollo.

"I can't stand looking at footage from that time," laughs Vince. "It's weird. I'm there with the fast forward button. Maybe in 20 years time it will be cute and I'll think it's interesting but it's too close at the moment. I'm just thinking, 'Oh my God what was I wearing?'."

"Neither of us were saints, that's for sure," adds Vince. "It maybe affected Andy more, he went through a down period and that. But it didn't affect our relationship. There's always the next day and things get better and brighter. I never lost hope or thought that it would be the end of us."

These days things are very different. "We're more sensible," says Andy. "Which comes with age I think. When we go out with each other now we look out for each other rather than scouting round looking for what's going on. We make sure nothing untoward happens to the other one."

The band will be hitting the road in February and, as ever, the shows will be ostentatious, full of glamour and, no doubt, rollicking good fun.

"We're going to do a mix of everything," says Vince. "I don't mind doing the old stuff. Andy gets a bit tired of it but I love it. The show is going to be a set based around an enchanted forest and Andy's going to be some kind of weird Elvis Presley figure. I'll probably end up as Gandalf," he laughs.

"But I love it, I totally love Andy's ideas. He's full of surprises. If I think about set designs I'm thinking about science fiction, something futuristic and electronic-themed. Then Andy comes up with something like the enchanted forest idea and I'm like, 'Oh yeah that's good'. He's such a great showman and looks so good on stage, I love it."
